Why Is My Front Door Drafty? Repair or Replace?

A cold draft may come from a worn seal, poor fit, or a gap around the frame. It does not always mean you need a new door.

The short answer

A drafty front door does not always need replacement. The leak may come from weatherstripping, a door sweep, or a small fixed gap.

The door may also be warped or poorly fitted. The frame, threshold, or rough opening may have trouble too.

Start by finding where the air enters. Then match the fix to that location.

Find the draft before choosing a fix

Check the door on a cold or windy day. Stay inside and keep the door closed.

Look and feel around these areas:

  • Top and sides. Check where the door meets the weatherstripping.
  • Bottom edge. Look for light near the sweep or threshold.
  • Latch side. See whether the door pulls tight when locked.
  • Hinge side. Look for uneven gaps or loose hinges.
  • Frame and trim. Feel for air beyond the moving door.
  • Glass and panels. Check seals and joints for visible damage.

Do not use an open flame to hunt for leaks. Note the exact area instead. Photos can also help during an estimate.

Some drafts need a focused repair

The U.S. Department of Energy separates moving joints from fixed gaps. Weatherstripping belongs where the door closes. Caulk belongs at stationary cracks.

A focused repair may fit when the door and frame remain sound. Common examples include:

  • Adjusting a loose hinge or strike plate
  • Replacing crushed or missing weatherstripping
  • Fitting a worn door sweep or threshold seal
  • Sealing a small stationary joint near the frame

The door should still open, latch, and lock with normal effort. New seals should not hide rot, water entry, or a badly twisted frame.

The gap may be behind the trim

Air can pass between the door frame and the wall opening. Trim may hide that path.

DOE Building America guidance calls for an air seal at this rough opening. It lists backer rod, caulk, or low-expansion foam made for doors and windows. Fibrous insulation alone does not stop airflow.

This work needs care. Ordinary expanding foam can distort a jamb. The product instructions and opening condition should guide the repair.

Water signs need more than weatherstripping

A draft and a water leak are not the same problem. Rain marks, soft wood, peeling finish, or recurring moisture need a wider review.

Building America guidance treats doors as breaks in the wall's drainage layer. Head, jamb, and sill details should direct water out. The flashing should connect with the wall's water-control layer.

Do not seal over a drainage path without knowing where water will go. Ask how the threshold, sill, flashing, and surrounding wall work together.

When replacement deserves a closer look

Replacement may be worth comparing when repair cannot restore sound fit or function. Look for:

  • A warped, cracked, or badly damaged door
  • Soft or rotted frame material
  • A loose or damaged threshold
  • Uneven gaps that remain after basic adjustment
  • A lock or latch that will not align safely
  • Recurring water entry around the opening
  • Several failed seals or parts in the same assembly

These signs do not prove you need a new door. They support an on-site review of the full opening.

Compare the door and the installation

A new door can still leak if the installation is incomplete. ENERGY STAR tells buyers to compare products for their climate zone. It also warns that poor installation can leave a good door drafty.

When comparing products, review the exact ENERGY STAR and NFRC labels. U-factor describes heat transfer. A lower value means better insulating performance. Glass in the door also affects the rating.

Then compare each installation scope. Ask these questions:

  1. Will the work replace the slab, frame, or full door unit?
  2. How were the frame and threshold checked?
  3. How will the opening be set plumb, level, and square?
  4. What weatherstripping and bottom seal are included?
  5. How will the rough opening be air sealed?
  6. How will the sill and flashing direct water out?
  7. Which trim, siding, paint, and hardware work are included?
  8. What happens if hidden damage appears?

Choose the smallest sound solution

A worn seal may need a small repair. A damaged opening may need broader work. The draft alone does not settle the question.

Map the leak first. Record any sticking, water marks, soft spots, or lock trouble. Then compare repair and replacement in writing.

Why do I feel a draft even with new weatherstripping?

The air may enter under the sweep or around the frame. Poor alignment can also keep the seal from making even contact.

Does daylight around the door mean it needs replacement?

Not always. A worn seal or alignment problem can create light gaps. Damage, poor fit, and water signs still need review.

Can caulk stop a draft around a front door?

Caulk can seal some fixed joints. It should not replace weatherstripping at moving parts or cover an active water problem.
